Ecological approach to rethinking an inclusive classroom
Speaker: Dr. Gloria Ma
When we talk about inclusive classroom, it is not only about in-class arrangement or adaptive curriculum design. Instead, we should adopt ecological mindset to conceptualize an inclusive teaching and learning environment, such as societal culture, policy, use of terminology and pictures, transportation, classroom’s physical setting, in-class dynamics, and interpersonal interactions of teachers and students. All these dimensions are interactive in nature and affect the process and outcome of teaching and learning. Real-life examples based on the speaker’s personal experiences will be discussed.
Dr. Gloria Ma finished her PhD in Psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2018. Her research interests focus on ecological approaches to addressing ableism toward people with disability, particularly architectural accessibility and universal design, International Symbol of Accessibility, and disability experiential simulation. Living with congenital muscular dystrophy as a power wheelchair user, Gloria actively participates in disability advocacy and co-founded “Wheel Power Challenge” in 2014 which organizes a series of experiential programs to promote accessibility concepts and co-create social inclusion.

Speaker: Dr. Cici Lam

Well-trained teachers play a vital role in inclusive education as they can identify students with special needs and intervene early and provide differentiated teaching in view of diversity of students. The question is what constitutes the best professional learning for upskilling teachers for inclusive practices in the Hong Kong context? This seminar will first discuss how the teacher professional learning transform in response to the new challenges in inclusive education, followed by the new initiatives of developing other kinds of professional learning models in supporting schools to cater students’ diversity.
