This research project, entitled as “The Effective Use of Teaching Assistants within Whole School Approach: The Role, Management and Training of Teaching Assistants”, was funded by internal Seed Funding for Basic Research and took place from September 2009 to November 2010. The research set out to map current practice of role, management and training of Teaching Assistants (TAs) in representative number of schools in Hong Kong (HK). The research was conducted in two main phases. The first phase involved questionnaire survey of total of 599 schools (targeting 30% of local primary/secondary schools, 15% of local and international kindergartens and whole population of ESF, international and special schools). The second phase of the research targeted 17 randomly selected schools as case-sites in order to gain better understanding of deployment of TAs. The case studies involved face to face interviews with school principals, head of individual needs, teachers, TA and focus group with principal/head of TA and teachers.
