Supporting Primary School Students who are at-risk of English Reading Difficulties

Abstract
Many kindergarten and primary school students are facing challenges in learning to read English as a second language. In the present talk, the speaker will present her recent research findings related to second language learning of Hong Kong students in early years. She will also share the language-enriched phonics intervention designed by her research team and effects of the program on English reading development. She will discuss how her research work can inform the educational support given to children who are at-risk of English reading difficulties.

Dr. Susanna Siu-Sze YEUNG is currently Assistant Professor of Department of Psychology at The Education University of Hong Kong. Her research interests revolve around early second language learning, classroom intervention for young children and detection and remediation of reading problems. Before joining EdUHK, she had taught in various local tertiary institution. Currently, her projects investigate children’s reading development in English, cognitive-linguistic foundations of second language learning and the role of home environment in language learning.
