HKU CAISE KE Seminar: Using online apps to facilitate interactions in “Zoom” meetings: Sharing of practices of a PgDE course

Abstract

Because of the COVID-19 epidemic, online teaching and meeting via conferencing applications such as Zoom, Skype for business and Tencent Meeting have become popular. This seminar will introduce how teaching and guidance personnel can use different online apps on Zoom to facilitate the involvement and discussion of the partici- pants based on the speaker’s Zoom class for a PgDE course. Some of the apps to be covered include Google Form and Google Slides, Jamboard, Padlet, Mentimeter and Nearpod. Other than introducing the apps, emphasis will be placed on how teachers and guidance personnel can encourage participation from their participants by using questions and prompts, careful planning of the activities, sparing more time for participants to discuss and share their ideas and views, and the importance of debriefing. Participants of the seminar will have first-hand experience with using the apps and they can feel free to incorporate them in their teaching and implementation of guidance activities if they see fit.
