CAISE Seminars on TRANSITIONING

Seminar 1: A Right to Support for Transitioning to Adulthood for Autistic Young People
This seminar reviews the texts of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Rights of the Persons with Disabilities and related General Comments as well as Concluding Observations on states’ reports. It puts forward that there is a right to support for transitioning to adulthood generally for children with disabilities. In the light of such right, and given the nature and characteristics of autism, autistic young people shall be provided with individualized and coordinated support that can effectively facilitate their transitioning to adulthood and inclusion in post-secondary and community life. The two Conventions provide both moral justification and practical guidance in setting up a people-centred, rights-base support network. These international legal instruments speak to governments, professionals, carers and actors/ entities involved in supporting adolescents with autism.
