Learning by Teaching: Designing an Empowering Space for Self-Regulated Learning for AI Augmented Kids

Abstract
How can we support adolescents in navigating the digital world through their own lens? This query is at the center of the work that Kigumi Group, a social enterprise based in Hong Kong, does. Based on our work with students, parents and schools in Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand over the last 3 years, we have found that most approaches to digital literacy and digital wellbeing frame problems from the point of view of the adult teachers or adult parents, but rarely from the adolescent lens. Given that adolescence is a time for exploration, identity-making, and increasing independence, there is an opportunity here for edtech providers (and adults who serve children more generally) like Kigumi to provide a supportive, adolescent-led space for (safe) boundary-pushing and meaning-making around digital wellbeing (including emergent topics like AI companions / AI ethics).  (Doing so is also in the long term interest of this generation, who will require a heightened tolerance for ambiguity and a more robust sense of self-directed learning, as they navigate uncharted territories as the first generation to adopt AI from a pre-teen age.) In this talk, Ms. Mila Devenport, Founder of Kigumi Group, will explain how their current project, an edtech platform called KiguLab, seeks to provide that safe, supportive space for adolescents to co-create their own knowledge and meaning about digital wellbeing topics while remaining within an ethical framework (provided by adults) that mediates, but does not control, their perspectives.
